Summer Tunes [New Music Favorites]

Living in the sweltering Florida heat makes me partial to the small relief that comes in autumn. Things cool down just enough for cosy sweaters and combat boots, which is a beautiful relief from the summer months when you break a sweat just stepping outside.

I do, however, relish summer for the endless stream of new music! It's as if every recording artist simultaneously decided to drop new tunes as the first days of summer roll around.

I have a pretty eclectic taste in music, so hopefully you'll like what I have to offer!

Now, I'll dole out the favorites in order of album release date.

1. The Mowgli's

Kids in Love - get it here

Favorite tracks: I'm Good, Bad Dream, Home To You

I'll admit I've been pretty noncommittal about The Mowgli's. I've only listened to their music sporadically over the past couple years, but when I heard they had a new album I had to give it a listen. While sometimes they border on kiddish with the constant "oh"-ing, they consistently produce upbeat and feel good music - something hard to come by these days.

2. Mumford and Sons

"Wilder Mind" - get it here

Favorite tracks: Tompkins Square Park, Ditmus, Snake Eyes, Hot Gates

Mumford is a long time favorite of mine. Since 2009, when they debuted "Sigh No More", I was hooked. The songs were folky but upbeat, and the lyrics were relentlessly thoughtful and layered. Marcus Mumford is a master when it comes to songwriting, and a true favorite of mine. Everyone keep there fingers crossed that they stay together for a long time to come - no more indefinite hiatuses, please!

3. Twenty One Pilots

"Blurryface" - get it here

Favorite tracks: Ride, Polarize, Hometown, The Judge

Tee One Pee, as my best friend loves to call them, are a male duo that will knock your socks off. Their music is buzzy and electric, giving you a much needed jolt of energy and enthusiasm every time you turn it on.

The lyrics are complicated at times and blatantly clear others, but every song can strike a personal and emotional chord with the listeners. Even with three previous albums, they're pretty small-time. They have a small but loyal fan base dubbed the "skeleton clique", which is getting bigger every day.

4. Florence + the Machine

"How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful" - get it here

Favorite tracks: Ship To Wreck, Delilah, What Kind Of Man

I am completely mad for this album. I've been a bit of a pathetic Florence fan, only listening to a song here or there after I discovered her stellar vocals and hip swaying rhythms. But this, oh this has me hooked. The tunes are just as wonderful as the tracks off Ceremonials and Lungs, but her vocals are even more soulful and personal - as the singer has even said herself.

5. Of Monsters and Men

Beneath the Skin - get it here

Favorite tracks: Crystals, I of the Storm,

This five piece folk-pop band hails from Iceland. I've ben obsessively listening to their debut album "My Head is an Animal" for the past two years. I discovered their song Dirty Paws in a trailer for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (which, might I add, is among my favorite movies), and since then I've been a huge supporter.

Their new release has been long overdue, and while it does roam into more electronic territory, it maintains it's folky ease. The lyrics are also stellar, taking it up a notch from the already wonderfully written songs from the first album.

I also have to give a nod to a few great singles that have been released in the past couple of weeks! The summer of 2015 is the time for pop music.

1. Demi Lovato killin' it in Cool for the Summer

2. Selena Gomez making everybody swoon in Good For You

3. Adam Lambert breaking everyone's heart with Ghost Town

4. Mike Posner showing his soft side with Be As You Are

5. Owl City & Aloe Blacc vibing with Verge

Here's hoping you listen to some good music this week!
